No surprise, the ingredients for the transformation spell were sold at Hocus Pocus in Mystic Quarter, which included: black salt, black candles, grave dirt, and a bone from a black cat—which Tyrius objected to highly, but I didn’t make the rules. But when I’d asked the witch where I could find the poppy seed extract, she looked at me with big round eyes and ushered me out of her shop, none too gently

Damn. Jeeves had been right. I would only find the poppy seeds in some shop in Hoboken, New Jersey, called TWILIGHT NATURAL MEDICINE.

I jerked awake when the cab jiggled over some railroad tracks, snorting and wiping the corner of my mouth as I sat up. My eyes went to Tyrius on my lap, staring out the window of the passenger’s side. Crap, I’d fallen asleep.

Still in my disguise, which was only a black hoodie, we made the expensive cab ride to New Jersey. It was three in the morning by the time we got there, and I feared that the shop, if you want to call it that, would be closed. But Jeeves had said the shop’s owner, an old elf, never slept and we just had to knock. Guess we’d see.

I paid for the cab and we got out. The street was a quiet one. The streetlights glowed with silver halos as the rain came down. The shop was more of an old farmhouse with a black metal roof, white batten board siding and a small front porch. It looked inconsequential and out of place next to the tall, red brick apartment complexes that lined the street. A sign in painted black letters embellished with stars read TWILIGHT NATURAL MEDICINE.

Tyrius padded along the wet concrete sidewalk, examining the shop. “Looks like there’s no one home.”

I could only see shadows of furniture through the two small windows that flanked the black front door. “Maybe he works in the dark?” I said hopefully, but I doubted that. Most humans were asleep at three in the morning, though it was when most paranormals came out and to play. Yet, seeing as this elf was old and catered to the human population, it was more likely he was sleeping.

I tightened the strap of my messenger bag and made for the front door. I tried the handle. “It’s locked.” I made a fist and knocked three times on the door. “Gareth?” I called. “Mr. Gareth? Are you there?” I turned my ear to the door and waited, but all I heard was the buzzing of the street lights behind us. I knocked again. “Hello? We’re friends of Jeeves—”

“Like hell we are,” grumbled Tyrius.

I glared down at the cat and then turned my head back towards the front door and raised my voice. “He told us you could help us with some special herbs? Mr. Gareth? It’s really important that we get those herbs.”

“End of the world kind of important,” shouted Tyrius.

I backed away from the door and looked up to the windows on the second floor.
